New to SH and just had first ablation done.

Hello everyone. Let me tell you how grateful I was when I found this site. It feels no one understands unless theyve been through it and its been refreshing to read through the forums here. A little about me: Im 22 and have had SVT since age 11. The SVT started getting really bad about a year and half ago. I was put on Verapimil which didnt help at all. 6 days ago I went through my first ablation and Ive been feeling very strange ever since. Little skips here and there and a wierd sensation in my chest/throat. About 20 minutes ago I had a really bad "skipping attack" is the only way I can describe it. Lot of skips in a row followed by racing heart which eventually went away. I think the racing was due to anxiety from the skips. Is this normal? Its so very uncomfortable and Im due to be at work in an hour and Im terrified for that to happen while Im working. Thanks. Really freaking out.

Well welcome to the forum Amanda, you will be sure to get some help here, just like you im new to these thumps, pauses, blips and ticks.

Just like you im 23 and new to these wierd heart feelings. And i can for sure tell you after i have one i get a sudden rush of adrenaline and fear which will make your heart speed up for a while.

Also i would like to ask, how does an ablation feel? How is the procedure done?

After getting help here what you might be feeling is PVCs or PACs which are benign in a healthy heart even tho it dosnt feel benign. Just talk to your doctor for reasurance that your heart is fine and that every one sooner or later feels these wierd palpitations. Ive read that it can take up to 6 months for an ablation to take full affect so the heart will form scar tissue were they ablated your crazy electrical activity, but not for every body, some people might feel the full benefit of the ablation immediatly.

Hope you have a skip free day at work, and again welcome to the forum.

Yessss the racing and skipping is normal. I have heard you can expect skipped beats after an albation as the heart muscle tries to fix itself as well. It can take weeks for your heart to feel "normal" again But the best reassurance is to call your doc, tell them what you are feeling and they can put your mind at ease

I'd echo what Dani said - there's brand new scar tissue in your heart and there are some electrical impulses that now aren't sure what to do or where to go, and of the massive amounts of reading I've done about ablation, it's not only normal but expected that you have some fits and spurts as your heart heals itself and settles in.

And yeah, be sure to call your cardiologist and explain what you're feeling - s/he may be able to get you something to help while your heart heals.

Hope the work day is going ok!

Thank you very much for the quick responses. Im at work and have only felt one skip while driving. Fingers crossed that will be all for today. One skip is more then enough lol. The ablation was done by a cathetar inserted through the artery by the groin. They had to go through each side of my groin area and also on my neck. Im unsure of why they had to go through all 3 places. They probe the heart to trigger an SVT attack and from there they find the spot where the extra wiring is and they burn it off. It was a bit painful and uncomfortable as they were putting me into the SVT mode and inserting the cathetar was painful as well. They lightly sedate you during the process. Recovery is fairly quick though.

Welome Amanda! Seriously, you should just call your electrophysiologist doctor. This is really common and he might be able to give you a low dose of some type of beta blocker or calcium channel blocker to help until your heart settles down. I have heard a lot of people say that it feels like your heart trys to go into SVT, but can't anymore so it just flutters around for a second. So it sounds like your ablation was a success if you haven't gone back into full SVT mode! Hang in there.

Hi Amanda and welcome! I'm sorry you are dealing with all these things. I can't offer much advice just support asi don't k ow anything about ablation and I myself am struggling so bad with fear from PVCs that I can barely function. I hope things quickly get better for you. I look forward to getting to know you better and see a great result!
