Potassium, PVCs and PMS...wow

I have been doing SO much reading and I really think I came across something significant.

I have noticed that most often my lab tests reveal a low potassium level. Only once did I notice below “normal” and that happened to be when I was in the ER with a bad tachycardia event. No doctor ever mentioned the correlation. Other times it was within normal range, but just barely. That is why the cardio said taking a supplement would be ok because he prefers it to be around 4 and mine is typically around 3.4-3.6.

I know that low potassium can cause PVCs. In researching safe supplement dosages, I came across info regarding low potassium and PMS. Here is one of the documents: Potassium: A New Treatment for Premenstrual Syndrome - Beckie E. Takacs, M.S. (there were several). As it turns out, I have also been diagnosed with PMDD and have a uterine fibroid. A light bulb went off. You see, I can go for 2-3 weeks with barely any palpitations. But then 7-10 days prior to my period, they go NUTS!!

So I am really wondering if I become deficient in potassium before my period which is causing these awful PVCs, my horrible fatigue and major PMDD symptoms. My gut is really telling me something here. And I am almost having a moment of joy thinking I may have figured something out after feeling miserable for so many years.

Now I know that too much potassium can be dangerous for people with arrhythmias, so I do fear taking this supplement. So, I am going to speak with a nutritionist/pharmacist I know in town here asap. I really hope there is something to this!!

That is a good idea, I tried taking potassium prescribed by my naturopath, unfortunately, it did not help. It seems like things that help for a while, stop and then are no good.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I was on a potassium prescription when mine was low and eventually it started giving me palpitations and horrible nausea. I wouldn't take a potassium supplement I'd eat potassium rich foods as much as possible and take magnesium as it helps to retain potassium in the system.

I know since I added calcium to my magnesium, the magnesium does not seem to be working as well and again, am noticing more of those skips, geesh.

Heart skipping heart

Hi everybody,,New to skipping hearts i do not kno if i am sending to the right thread. But here i have had skipping heart beats and the frist time i got them i had just started to take Buspar. The heart Dr. said get used to it.i tryed every thing i could think of to get it to stop skipping .I ran out of med and did not refill 3 days later the skipping stopped. I am not saying get off med but i in myself have noticed certain things trigger the skipping. i used to take vitamins and tri-boron for my joints and it started skipping again, stopped taking them and the skipping stopped. Also i am very allergic to MSG that is in so many foods that triggers bad bad skipping heart . Just try getting off vits minerls and all that stuff for a few days and eat fruits ,veges, fresh very well washed lean meats with no added flavorings and coloring. just flavor them your self with herbs and garlic salt pepper. read labels. I in myself can stop or start the skipping just by what i eat.even some icecream will trigger it the banana split flavor. Hope it helps, Hang in there be GOOD to your body watch what you put in it.

The more calcium u take the more magnesium you need. Magnesium balances ur calcium levels. Susie maybe that's ur problem

@hildaval - Welcome to the site! Glad you were able to find some or all of your triggers, and certainly those are things that can be worth trying for others. My two biggies are stress and lack of sleep. I can drink coffee all day and night, take vitamins, etc, and nothing ever happens. But if I miss a few hours of sleep for 3 straight nights? Trouble city.

Anyway - keep up your personal research and let us know how it goes. And be sure to investigate some of the things others have found here, too.

My nutritionist JUST told me tonight that calcium and magnesium compete in the GI track. She said to limit calcium when trying to increase magnesium absorption! I was shocked!! Stop the calcium and see how u do. I will talk with her more tomorrow.

The magnesium seemed to be helping for me and then I added Calcium last week (500mg) and my heart skips increased. So I plan to get my calcium from foods. Kind of interesting. The Natural Calm seems to be helping but I"m splitting the doses because it can really make you poop!
