Muscle spasms and Metoprolol

Posted 11-24-2011 at 08:29 AM by Miss Elizabeth

Has anyone taking Metoprolol experienced muscle spasms? I have been taking the drug for about a year now and about a month ago I started having mild muscle spasms that last for five or more minutes. They are not painful just annoying.

Hope everyone's Thanksgiving is full of friends, family, and serenity.

I do not take it so I am not sure. But I would be surprised that it would take this long to show side effects? I could be wrong though

I hope you had a wonderful thanksgiving! xoxo

I've been taking Nadolol for like 20 years. Recently, because of long runs of NSVT, I was switched to Metoprolol. Ugh. It was the worst experience of my life.

The first week I felt like I was so exhausted that I couldn't function in an upright position. Then, oddly enough - I started feeling twitchy. Whenever anything happened that would cause an adrenaline surge, my hands would shake uncontrollably. I was also getting strange, constant muscle twitching!!!! I mentioned it to my husband and even made him hold his hand on a random twitching body part to show him. I haven't been back to my electrophysiologist since I stopped taking it (switched myself back to Nadolol - twitching/shaking disappeared!), but I plan to ask him what in the heck was going on. I had taken it for about 3 weeks so I had to have adjusted to it by that time, but my side effect symptoms were getting worse.

ps: the spasms would last for several minutes and just like yours, weren't painful, but were constant. I might have them in my arm, on my ribcage, in my shoulder, my pinky finger, my calf, you name it. No pattern, just very, very unusual.

Dani, you are so sweet. Thank you for the good thoughts. Bypeep, thanks for letting me know your experience. I suspected that the medication was the culprit. Sometimes the side effects don't kick in until the medication has had a chance to build up. At the moment the twitches aren't troublesome, but I think I will mention them to the doctors. I don't want to switch medications again...it takes me a long time to adjust to the changes and right now I feel really well, twitching aside.

I took Metoprolol for about 2 months.. I never had the muscle twitch thing, but my hands and feet were always tingly, like they had fallen asleep... They would even go numb at times.. Haven't had that since I stopped taking them though!
