Ectopics/palpitations worsened by pregnancy!!!

Posted 09-26-2011 at 10:22 AM by Smurfette

So, I've only just come across this site. Been suffering with ectopics, missed beats etc etc etc for a couple of years now. I've had all the tests and told theres nothing wrong (still cant get my head round that as it feels VERY wrong!). Its hard trying to explain to anyone I know as they have no experience, if I mention palpitations they assume my heart is racing, but its totally different to that. It feels like its stopped and then thumps so hard I actually feel a pain in my heart, if only for a second. I really really try to ignore it but its so hard. It literally stops me in my tracks sometimes, especially if I haven't had any in a while. My heart no longer races with anxiety or excitement anymore, its like its lost that cpability, instead it does the stopping and thumps, especially during exercise which I've all but given up, which I know is bad but I'm too scared.
So now I'm pregnant with my first child and its gotten a whole lot worse. The midwife says not to worry, its common etc but its all day every day. It is now waking me up at night, which is new. I can't even hoover or wash my hair without my body thinking this is too strenuous and stopping me by missing beats and thumping hard, over and over. Its hard not to just lie down and wish it would hurry up and kill me if its going to.
I am so worried about the pregnancy as I feel that if its like this already (I'm only 4 months), what will it be like later when the baby is big and I have more blood volume?
Has anyone any experience with pregnancy and this? I want to enjoy my pregnancy, not constantly be worried or afraid!

Welcome to the site! Mine got so much worse during pregnancy so I know exactly how you are feeling. The first 4-1/2 months were the worse. When all those hormones are flying high. Then it did settle down some. I'm sure yours will too but it really sucks to deal with it. You will be okay! I'm still here and my daughter is now 21 years old!
The only time they acted that way again was when I started peri menopause. So I KNOW this is hormone related for you. Hang in there! Like you mentioned, you are feeling them even stronger because of the additional blood supply you have with pregnancy. (that is what my doctor told me). But for some reason, mine got better around my 5th month. So for me, it was more hormone related then blood volume related.
    Take care!

Thanks for the reassurance Jodie! I do hope mine get better soon as well, even though its gotten worse the past week or so. Its great to talk to people who understand - for something that's supposed to be so common not one person I know has any experience with this and I feel really alone sometimes. I'm glad I found this site

They are scary and sometimes your fear over takes you. I feel my pulse, I feel my chest, I try to listen to my heart... all of it and it sucks. I am with you my friend xoxo

    Hi Jodie,
I got them really bad when I was pregnant with both of my children. My sister got them really bad with her last child too. It really is a very common thing in pregnancy.
Right now I'm having PVC's even worse than when I was pregnant... At least when I was pregnant I could be like "Oh, it's just because I'm pregnant, maybe the baby is sitting on something, maybe my hormones are out of whack" Now I have no excuse whatsoever and it's driving me insane! But I've had it since I was about 13... I am now 25, and I made it through having 2 children... I even made it through natural childbirth! Our hearts are a lot stronger then we give them credit for. It's just annoying when it doesn't beat right. Just remember to get plenty of sleep! It always makes it worse with less sleep... Also, if it really bothers you at night try and sleep sitting up, and don't lay on your left side. It helped me while I was preggers I hope it helps you too! Keep us informed!

    Hi,
I'm interested in how they were for you during natural childbirth? I want a natural birth too but am afraid of the PVCs as they intensify with any kind of straining, even small!

I had no problem with them during the actual birth (natural). I thought they would intensify too because of the pushing, but they didn't. I had some (many) prior to pushing but they called my cardiologist and he told them it wasn't going to be a problem and it wasn't. Don't worry, you will be concentrating on other things (umm, like dealing with labor if you know what i mean)! Everything will turn out fine!!!!

Well, I've heard bad things about epidurals, so I knew I didn't want one of those. I had a few PVC's while I was pushing, but trust me you are so preoccupied with what's going on that you don't even notice them. I think not having any drugs made me feel better personally. My sister has the same thing that I do and she has had 4 natural child births! That and you're in a hospital (hopefully) so if something does go wrong, you're in the best hands! I don't know if this is very good advice or not, but it worked for me... I tend to freak out when I'm in hospitals or even the doc office, and it makes my BP go up... So I've found that if I don't eat anything it lowers my heart rate and my BP... Which in turn made me have less PVC's because my heart wasn't racing while I was trying to push. I had to be induced with both of my children (I don't recommend that, my contractions were constant the whole time!) So anyways, I ate before I went into the hospital and then I didn't eat while I was there... Not that they let you eat most times. But they did offer things like jello and orange juice, and I stay away from sugar anyways because it makes my heart race... So.. Ice chips it was! I'm sure you will do great! A few tricks to reducing the PVC's while your prego though, I couldn't just go lay down in bed I had to sit on the edge of the bed and then slowly lay down. Same thing with chairs... Anything that made me sit too low too fast caused my heart to skip constantly.
